Diabetic Macular Edema (DME)



What is Diabetic Macular Edema?

Diabetic Macular Edema (DME) is a complication of diabetes caused by fluid accumulation in the macula, the central portion of the retina, where vision is the sharpest.

The macula is the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision.

Diabetic retinopathy is a disease that damages the blood vessels in the eye, resulting in visual impairment. DME can occur at any stage of diabetic retinopathy, although it is more likely to occur as the disease progresses.

Vision loss from DME can result in severe blurred vision.

What are the treatment options for DME?

Consultation and discussion with your eye specialist is needed to determine the best treatment for an individual’s situation. However, treating DME include:

  • Control blood sugar levels

  • Control cholesterol

  • Control blood pressure levels

  • Maintain healthy body weight

  • Exercise

  • Quit smoking

  • Eat a balanced diet

  • Visit your eye doctor annually
