Diabetic Macular Edema (DME) is a complication of diabetes caused by fluid accumulation in the macula, the central portion of the retina, where vision is the sharpest.
The macula is the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision.
Diabetic retinopathy is a disease that damages the blood vessels in the eye, resulting in visual impairment. DME can occur at any stage of diabetic retinopathy, although it is more likely to occur as the disease progresses.
